Stop At: Stampede Excursions, Mile 238.6 Parks Highway, Denali National Park and Preserve, AK 99755

Avoid busses and crowds by taking the wheel of a Jeep Renegade to explore Denali on your terms! It’s part Jeep rental, part personal tour, and 100% fun! You choose your destination, stop when and where you want, and never feel rushed. The Denali region has one of the most majestic landscapes on Earth—Lush valleys carved during the last Ice Age, tremendous mountains that reach for the sky, glacier-fed whitewater rivers, and world-renown wildlife viewing, creating a synergy that captivates and astonishes around every twist of the road!

More than just a car rental, this Jeep excursion gives you the ability to get off the beaten path in a rugged vehicle designed for weather-proof safety and comfort. Our late model GPS-equipped 4x4 Jeep Renegades have 4 doors and can seat up to 5 guests.

You will receive a map and souvenir guide book which details the historic roadways, local attractions, and unique points of interest. There are several different routes we can suggest based on your personal interests, but you have the freedom to make your own as well! Our team of experts will share their local knowledge to make sure you make the most of your limited time in Denali!

Duration: 15 minutes

Pass By: Denali National Park, AK

Instead of the big bus tours, explore the park your way! Take a selfie at the park sign, explore the Denali National Park Visitor Center, tour historic buildings, venture down hiking trails, and visit the park’s own sled dogs at the Denali kennels. Traversing the  the entire accessible road to the Savage River affords views of Denali (Mount McKinley) as well as frequent sightings of moose, caribou, bears, and a myriad of other critters. Expect a 40 mile round trip which allows extra time for exploring the park’s attractions.

Pass By: Denali Highway, Between Cantwell and Paxson, AK

Before the “new” highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks was finished in the 1970’s, the Denali Highway stretching from Paxson to Cantwell was the only way to reach Denali National Park by road. Still just a seldom-traveled gravel roadway today, it is renowned for picturesque alpine landscapes and untouched wilderness. This scenic byway was recently ranked #2 worldwide as the “Drive of a Lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler magazine. Besides the ability to view Denali (Mount McKinley) from numerous points, travelers will likely see wildlife along the route. Expect an 80 mile round trip.

Pass By: Stampede Trail trailhead, Stampede Trail, Healy, AK 99743, USA

Driving north winds you through 10 miles of Nenana River Canyon and across the highway’s highest bridge, known as the Windy Bridge. Around the town of Healy, the region’s mining history emerges. To the east, you’ll see the Usibelli Coal Mine, the only active coal mine in Alaska. Just beyond is the Stampede Road, a historic mining trail, this is the setting for the true-life novel, “Into the Wild.” Round trip about 50 miles.

We had a terrible experience with Stampede Excursions. I would really question their safety practices and quality of service. Not recommended.

Hands down the worst experience I have ever had with a tour operator. Not only was the service terrible, but the company is unethical in its practices. When the terrible weather was clearly unsafe and offered zero visibility, they forced the tour to move ahead anyway. Despicable. Would strongly encourage tourists to look elsewhere - there are many other options.

I loved that we could go when and where we wanted in the park. Gave us time to take all the photos we could not take on buses....also Brad picked us up at our hotel and returned us. Special thanks to Brad who also helped us look for moose on our return to the hotel trip...

Like a parallel universe to the Denali national park. Amazing scenery, glaciers, tundra desert, wildlife, mountains. Absolutely gorgeous. In my personal top three tours to do in the Denali area. I've spent three summers here, and this was by far one of the coolest things I've done. Nice to go at your own pace, bring snacks, stop when you want as long as you want. Absolutely worth it! Went all the way to Paxton and back in a day. Fantastic! Go see the Alaska range!!

Great way to see the area. Great opportunity to take a drive and see the sights for four hours. Heard the Park bus tours are good but sitting on a School Bus for 6, 9, or 12 hrs didn't seem appealing to us. The Jeep gave us a better option and the ability to go elsewhere. Could have used more time, it flew by so quick.

I was a little confused about this. I thought you could go places with this Jeep that you could not go in your own vehicle. We already had a rental so this was a waste of money for us but staff was very friendly. We had fun though and learned a lesson. Would definitely recommend if you didn’t have a rental car. Only thing I would change is the map or lack of. It’s just lines and with the fear of $199 a hour if your late made us Leary about exploring to far.

A group of 4 of us decided to do this excursion to see more of Alaska. We work up in Denali for the summer and on our days off we want to explore more. So we decided we wanted to see the whole Denali Highway. I looked into renting a vehicle. All of the vehicle rental places in Alaska will tell you in large print "RENTAL CARS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE DENALI HIGHWAY." So we found Stampede Excursions and they have the Denali Self-Guided Jeep Safari and they allow their jeeps to drive on the Denali highway. I was really excited that it was a self-guided tour because then we could stop whenever we wanted to for pictures. So we didn’t need to be held up with a guide and other people trying to take thousands of pictures. The scenery was really nice lots to see. We where able to see lakes, ponds, mountains, three different glaciers, the tundra, wildlife and it was spectacular! We where told that we where not guaranteed to see animals but we know wildlife is wild. But we got to see ptarmigans, robin’s, swan’s, moose, ground squirrel’s and some snowshoe hares. Also we picked blueberries!! It was cloudy day with a little bit of rain in some parts. But we could not have asked for a more beautiful day. I will recommend this tour to those who are in the area that would like to explore the Denali Highway.

We had hoped for what was stated as off road jeep excursion. We merely drove down highways we could have driven in our own car.

I booked this thinking that this would allow me to get further into Denali park where public vehicles are not able to go. This is not the case. Only buses are able to get further into the park. We did one of the recommended drives, it wasn’t bad, but we could have done it in our own (rental) vehicle. The drive from Anchorage to Denali was just as nice. If you don’t have a vehicle and want to drive around outside of the park, this may be something to do. But if you have your own vehicle, you don’t need this, or want to go into the park, you’ll need to get on the bus. For us, it wasn’t a good use of our time or money. Please note that the actual rental and service was fine. It just wasn’t what we thought it would be.

Great opportunity to take a drive and see the sights for four hours. Unfortunately to really get into Denali you have to take a Bus Tour. Heard they are good but for us sitting on a School Bus for 6, 9, or 12 hrs didn't trip our trigger. The Jeep gave us a better timed option for us and ability to go elsewhere.
